Start with the finished-fabric target

Hydrophilic masterbatch is used when a naturally water-repellent PP nonwoven needs controlled liquid wetting or transport. The useful starting point is not a universal dosage claim, but the finished-fabric requirement: initial wetting, repeated strike-through, liquid spread, retention or another customer test.

A hygiene top sheet, an acquisition layer and an industrial absorbent web can require different balances. The target layer and test method should therefore be named before a product route is selected.

Fabric construction changes the observed result

Basis weight, filament size, bonding pattern, layer structure and any downstream treatment can change how quickly liquid enters and moves through the web. A result from one spunbond structure should not be treated as a guarantee for a different SMS or composite construction.

Carrier compatibility and dispersion still matter

The carrier and active system must be compatible with the PP process and disperse consistently at the selected addition level. Poor compatibility can appear as unstable spinning, deposits, uneven wetting or variation across the fabric width. The trial should monitor both line behavior and the finished-fabric result.

Evaluation timing and storage conditions belong in the trial record

Some hydrophilic systems develop or migrate after production, and the measured response may change with conditioning time, temperature, humidity and packaging. Record when the sample was tested and how it was stored so that initial and aged results can be compared fairly.

A practical first-trial checklist

For a useful first review, share the PP resin or MFI, line type, fabric structure, basis weight, target test method, current additive route and destination market. The starting addition level and evaluation schedule can then be matched to the actual application rather than copied from an unrelated line.
